What We Believe

Foundation in the United Methodist Church

The Walk to Emmaus is theologically and institutionally grounded in The Upper Room ministry, which is part of the General Board of Discipleship of The United Methodist Church. This provides the event with a strong theological foundation rooted in Methodist traditions.

Ecumenical and Unity-Focused

The Walk to Emmaus is ecumenical. The program invites and involves the participation of Christians of many denominations. Emmaus is ecumenical not only because members of many denominations participate, but because Emmaus seeks to foster Christian unity and to reinforce the whole Christian community. This is one of the great strengths and joys of the Emmaus movement.

Commitment to Core Christian Beliefs

Despite being ecumenical, The Walk to Emmaus does not compromise on its theological integrity. It confidently communicates the essentials of the Christian life, focusing on the beliefs that have traditionally united Christians across denominations.

Structured and Standardized Format

The Upper Room Walk to Emmaus is carefully designed and conducted according to a universal manual. This ensures that each event follows a proven format, creating a consistent and trustworthy experience for participants, no matter where it is held.

Local Administration by Boards of Directors

Each Walk to Emmaus community is locally managed by a Board of Directors. These local boards ensure that the event is tailored to meet the needs of their specific communities while adhering to the program’s guidelines.

Global Oversight for Consistency

The program is administered globally by the International Emmaus office in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. This global oversight ensures that the Walk to Emmaus maintains high standards and consistency across all locations, ensuring the same experience for participants worldwide.

Our Mission Statement

Emmaus is centered on the revelation of God in Jesus Christ and how this is reflected in local churches. The goal of Emmaus is to encourage, test, and prepare people of the local church for Christian activity in their homes, churches, and places of employment.
