Get Involved and Serve with Emmaus

Without you, the Walk to Emmaus wouldn’t be possible! Volunteering is a powerful way to share Christ’s love and make an impact. Whether you can serve for a couple of hours or an entire weekend, every role is essential in creating a meaningful experience for our pilgrims.

Choosing Your Role: Inside Team or Outside Team

When volunteering, you’ll have the opportunity to serve in one of two key areas:
Outside Team – Open to all volunteers!
  • Serves meals and works on the Cook Team
  • Assists with set-up and break-down
  • Handles agape distribution and other tasks to support the weekend

Inside Team – Selected by the Board Representatives
  • Includes jobs like Table Leaders, Assistant Table Leaders, and ALDs (Assistant Lay Directors)
  • Plays a direct role in guiding and mentoring pilgrims throughout the weekend
  • Requires an application process

Other Ways to Volunteer

No matter your role, there are many other ways to serve during a Walk to Emmaus:
  • 72-Hour Prayer Vigil – Lift up the weekend in prayer from wherever you are.
  • Help Make Agape – Create and distribute notes, gifts, or decorations to encourage pilgrims through out the walk.
  • Saturday Night Candlelight – Join in this powerful time of worship and encouragement.
  • Sunday Send-Off & Closing – Be there as pilgrims begins their 4th day journey.

For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve...

Mark 10:45

Serving as a Sponsor

The most important way to serve is through sponsorship. Every pilgrim attends because someone cared enough to invite, encourage, and walk alongside them before, during, and after their experience. Sponsorship is how the Emmaus experience spreads, transforming lives one person at a time.
If you’re considering sponsoring someone, pray that God places the right people on your heart—those seeking to grow spiritually, strengthen their faith, and live more fully for Christ.

Volunteer Logistics & Costs

As an act of agape, volunteers pay their own fees. Inside team members are asked to pay the full $180 for the weekend. The outside team will receive some form of scholarship to help cover costs, though the exact amount has yet to be determined. The final cost may be either $80 for the full weekend or $8 per meal/overnight stay—more details will be provided as they become available.

Fees:
  • Inside Team: $180 for the entire weekend
  • Outside Team: Scholarship assistance available (Final cost TBD)

Arriving at Camp: Arrive well in advance of any meal or scheduled volunteer time. If the gate is closed, this means participants are in a session and should not be disturbed. The gate will reopen once they are settled.

Start with Prayer

The first step to serving at an Emmaus Walk is to pray. Ask God to prepare your heart with a spirit of servanthood and guide you in how you can best support the weekend.

Volunteer FAQ

What are the different ways I can volunteer?
You can serve on the Outside Team (helping with meals, set-up, break-down, and Agape) or apply for the Inside Team (table leaders, assistant table leaders, ALDs). You can also participate in the 72-hour prayer vigil, attend Candlelight or Send-off, and sponsor a pilgrim.
Do I need to commit to the entire weekend to volunteer?
No! You can serve for a few hours, a single day, or the whole weekend—whatever fits your schedule.
How much does it cost to volunteer?
Volunteers cover their own costs as an act of Agape:
  • $8 per meal
  • $8 per overnight stay
  • $80 for the full weekend
Do I need to register in advance to volunteer?
For the Inside Team, you must apply and be selected by the board representatives. For the Outside Team, no application is required, but it helps to let us know when you’re available so we can assign roles accordingly.
What is Agape, and how can I participate?
Agape is an act of love and encouragement. You can create notes, small gifts, or decorations for pilgrims, help distribute Agape items, or contribute financially to support these efforts.
Can I show up at any time to volunteer?
Yes, but be mindful of the schedule. Communicate your availability with the outside team coordinator. They will let you know when you can and cannot come to the retreat center.
What should I do before volunteering?
Begin with prayer, asking God how He wants to use you. Then, review available volunteer opportunities and let us know where you'd like to serve!
